Montgomery County police found a man dead inside a burning tent early Thursday in a wooded area near Randolph Road in Rockville.

Police are now investigating whether the man was murdered.

Police said officers were responding just after midnight to a call of an injured person in the 5400 block of Randolph Road when they came across the fire and the body. Police have not yet identified the man, whose body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.

Police said they’re in the preliminary stages of the homicide investigation and additional information will be released as it’s confirmed.

Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, said on his Twitter account the fire involved the tent as well as nearby vehicles at a homeless encampment. Piringer said one other individual was injured in the fire and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
