Updated at 10:25 a.m. – Montgomery County once again saw the largest population increase in the state last year, but at the county’s lowest rate of growth in the last five years, according to new statistics released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The county’s estimated population as of July 1, 2015, was 1,040,116, meaning a population boost of 9,640 since 2014.
It was at least the fifth straight year Montgomery was home to the largest total population increase of the state’s 24 jurisdictions, which includes 23 counties and Baltimore City.
But the rate of growth continued to slow.
The county grew by 16,889 people from 2010 to 2011 and 13,404 people from 2011 to 2012, the year the county passed the 1 million population mark. It grew by 12,692 people from 2012 to 2013 and 11,312 people from 2013 to 2014.
The county continues to be the most populous jurisdiction in the state.
The City of Rockville had a July 1, 2015, population of 66,980, according to the census numbers. That was an increase of 1,379 people since 2014 and an increase of more than 5,700 people since the 2010 census.
The census numbers released Thursday didn’t include 2015 population estimates for unincorporated places such as Bethesda and Silver Spring.
Correction: Due to a reporting error, this story originally reported Montgomery County was the second most populous jurisdiction in the state. It is the most populous.
