Pupusa Kitchen will be adjacent to Hanaro Sushi Credit: Joe Zimmermann

The owner of Hanaro Sushi plans to open a new takeout spot selling pupusas in downtown Bethesda this week.

Pupusa Kitchen plans to begin service Friday at 7812 Norfolk Ave., adjacent to Hanaro Sushi and sharing the same kitchen, owner Wesley Yao, who took over the sushi restaurant in December, said Thursday.

Yao said he believed pupusas—a Salvadoran specialty of tortilla stuffed with meats, cheese or beans—would be popular in downtown Bethesda as they are not easily available in the area. He said he plans to run Pupusa Kitchen as a separate business, but may also decide to offer pupusas on the Hanaro menu.

Pupusa Kitchen will serve ground pork, cheese and bean pupusas and will be open from 11 a.m.to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 4 to 9 p.m. Sundays.
