A longtime Gaithersburg dry cleaning business closed its doors in recent weeks, and a city official said a medical marijuana dispensary is moving in to fill the space.
Sherry Clagett, who operated Hershey’s Cleaners with her husband for almost six decades, last week confirmed the couple sold the storefront at 106 N. Frederick Ave. The dry cleaning company’s last day of business was June 30.
Clagett declined to identify the new owners of the roughly 3,800-square-foot structure that sits next to a carwash and gas station.
However, City Manager Tony Tomasello on Friday said Gaithersburg officials have learned the new owners want to use the building as a medical marijuana dispensary. Tomasello didn’t have information about when the shop might open, what products it might sell or other details about the incoming business.
The property owner, MCCW Gaithersburg LLC, has applied for a city permit to renovate the interior and for a site plan amendment to alter the exterior, according to city records. The application was filed by Mitchell Kahn, who owns Greenhouse Group, a medical cannabis business with four dispensary locations in Illinois.
Kahn did not respond to calls requesting comment.
Tomasello said the city is processing the permit request and is waiting for the property owner to provide additional information.
Another medical cannabis company, Green Thumb Industries, recently announced plans to open a dispensary on Fenton Street in Silver Spring. The shop would occupy a building that was formerly home to Banner Glass.
