Andres details Puerto Rico relief effort
Celebrity chef Jose Andres, owner of Jaleo in Bethesda, appeared on “60 Minutes” for his work to provide meals in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Andres and an army of volunteers have served more than three million meals on the island in the past couple of months. He started the project with $10,000 of his own money in cash and some credit cards. [60 Minutes]
Rahn voices doubts about Metro reform plan
Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn is questioning a Metro reform plan. The plan proposed by former U.S. transportation secretary Ray LaHood calls for a smaller “reform board,” but Rahn has expressed doubt about whether such a panel would be effective. Rahn has also voiced skepticism about other aspects of the plan, adding to uncertainty about whether the proposal will be accepted. [Washington Post]
County unveils initial designs for Bus Rapid Transit system
Initial designs for a 13.5-mile Bus Rapid Transit system on U.S. 29 have been completed. The line connecting Burtonsville to downtown Silver Spring is slated to open in 2020 and would be the state’s first BRT system. Montgomery County officials said the design work is 35 percent done, and construction should get started late next year. [Washington Post]
No retail in proposed apartment complex near Westfield Montgomery 
A developer has stripped retail from plans for a 340-unit apartment building on the site of the Ourisman Ford dealership across from the Westfield Montgomery mall. The developer, Foulger-Pratt, is taking the proposal before the Montgomery County Planning Board this week. A staff report prepared for the meeting shows that the retail component of the project was removed because it would have to compete with the nearby mall. This is the second attempt in eight years to replace the vacant dealership site with a new building. [Washington Business Journal]
Supreme Court won’t hear case on Maryland gun law
The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to take a case challenging Maryland’s law banning sales of semiautomatic guns with certain military-style features. The case was brought by the attorneys general of 21 states and had garnered support from the National Rifle Association. Maryland passed its ban after the 2012 shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. [Washington Post]
