State leaders say they support a ban on sales of bump stocks
Leaders in the state Legislature have said they want to ban sales of bump stocks, a device used in the Las Vegas mass shooting. The change would be an expansion of the state’s assault weapons ban. On Tuesday, spokespeople for Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. and House Speaker Michael E. Busch said both support banning bump stocks. Gov. County residents targeted in ‘grandparent scam’
Montgomery County police are warning people to look out for the “grandparent scam,” in which criminals pose as grandchildren of the people they’re targeting. The ploy recently cost two county residents $5,000. A Silver Spring resident said the scammer called her and pretended to be her grandson to trick her into sending him money. [WJLA]
Red Line closures lead to long lines in Silver Spring
Hundreds of people stood in line in Silver Spring this week to wait for shuttle buses to transport them around a shutdown on Metro’s Red Line. Track work has led to the suspension of train service between Silver Spring and Fort Totten for the next couple of weeks. Long lines formed in Silver Spring Tuesday when the shuttle bus service was slowed by a crash at Georgia and Eastern avenues. [WTOP]
Hundreds of Gaithersburg students removed from school because of gas leak
A gas leak discovered outside Laytonsville Elementary School in Gaithersburg on Tuesday caused a school evacuation. Hundreds of students were moved to Rosa Parks Middle School as work crews evaluated the leak. The students, who were bused to Rosa Parks, ate lunch at the middle school and spent the rest of the day there, a school system spokesman said. [Washington Post]
New dockless bikeshare station coming to Silver Spring
Silver Spring will soon get 100 new bikes as part of a dockless bikeshare program. The bikes will arrive Dec. 7 thanks to an agreement between the Montgomery County Department of Transportation and the Spin bike company. Spin is the third dockless bikeshare company to join the county’s dockless bikeshare demonstration project in Silver Spring. [Montgomery County Government]
Highs in the 50s expected for Thursday
Thursday’s forecast calls for mostly clear skies and highs in the upper 50s. There will be a chance of nighttime showers, and temperatures will fall to about 41 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
