Update – The victim’s middle name was corrected after being initially misspelled in a police press release.

A 53-year-old Montgomery County man was struck and later died after he tried to retrieve something from the Capital Beltway Tuesday night.

Maryland state police said Edward Keith Long, 53, died from the injuries he suffered after being struck by an Audi Q5 on Northbound I-495 at the I-270 spur around 9:30 p.m.

Police said a witness saw a Mitsubishi vehicle travel off the roadway near the spur and the witness pulled over to check the occupants of the car. At that time, the witness observed Long, who was driving the Mitsubishi, run into the roadway to try to grab an object and then get struck by the Audi.

Long was transported to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda where he died from his injuries, according to police.

The driver of the Audi, Andrew Robbins, 63, of North Potomac, was also transported to Suburban Hospital, although police did not describe the extent of Robbins’ injuries.
