Silver Spring man arrested on charges of sexually assaulting boy 

A 63-year-old Silver Spring man has been charged with raping a 12-year-old boy in Frederick. Police on Dec. 14 arrested the man, Ramon Manuel De Los Reyes. The boy told investigators the two had chatted online and that the man had picked him up and driven him to an apartment in Silver Spring. The man sexually assaulted him before taking him back to Frederick, the boy said. [Washington Post]

Blair didn’t vote in past primaries 

David Blair, the Potomac businessman who is running for Montgomery County executive, didn’t vote in gubernatorial or presidential primaries from 2006 to 2012. Blair said he likely missed the votes because he was occupied with his business. Other county executive candidates have voted in every primary and general election since 2006. [Washington Post]

High schools continue to retire the ‘Redskins’ moniker


At least 13 high schools across the nation have stopped using Redskins as their team mascot since 2013. At least 49 high schools in 20 states still use the nickname, shared by the D.C. football team. High schools have dropped the moniker because some consider it a slur against Native Americans. [Capital News Service]

Montgomery County lawmakers pitch Metro funding idea

State lawmakers from Montgomery and Prince George’s counties are planning to introduce legislation to increase Maryland’s contribution to the Metro system. Under the proposal, the state would boost its support for Metro by $125 million per year if certain conditions are met. Gov. Larry Hogan had a favorable initial response to the idea. New police chief of Takoma Park announced 

The chief for the Maryland National-Capital Park Police has taken a job as chief of the Takoma Park agency. Antonio “Tony” DeVaul will begin working as Takoma Park police chief on Jan. 2. He grew up in Takoma Park and has lived his whole life in Montgomery County. [City of Takoma Park]

Alcohol task force makes dozens of DUI arrests


A holiday alcohol task force at the Montgomery County Police Department arrested 38 people on charges of driving under the influence from Dec. 13 to 16. Over the past five weeks, the task force officers have arrested about 150 people. Those totals do not include arrests made by officers who aren’t part of the task force. The National Weather Service predicts Wednesday will be partly sunny, with highs approaching 50 degrees. Overnight, temperatures will fall to about 29 degrees, and the skies will be partly cloudy.
