CNBC ranks Montgomery County second in potential Amazon headquarters sites
The business channel examined the criteria set by Amazon, such as an educated workforce, access to transit and a solid business climate, and ranked locations on the criteria by using census and other publicly available data. It found Montgomery County ranked second out of the 20 finalists selected by Amazon, because of the county’s workforce, mass transit and job growth. Austin came in first, while Washington, D.C., was ranked third, Chicago fourth and Northern Virginia fifth. [CNBC]
Former Montgomery County economic development leader is key part of Amazon’s search for new headquarters
Holly Sullivan, the former president of Montgomery County’s Business Development Corp., is Amazon’s head of worldwide economic development. She notified jurisdictions that they had been shortlisted for the company’s new headquarters. Sullivan worked for the county from 2012 to 2016, before officials restructured the county’s economic development agency into an independent corporation. [Washington Business Journal]
Washington region surges ahead in Amazon headquarters competition
Amazon named D.C., Montgomery County and Northern Virginia to its list of 20 contenders for its new headquarters—making the Washington metropolitian region the only location in North America with three locations to make the initial cut. While local governments hailed the news, there was some concern that landing the internet retail giant would exacerbate traffic, increasing housing prices and burden school systems. [Washington Post]
Canales-Yanez convicted in Montgomery Village double homicide
Jose Canales-Yanez, 26, was convicted Thursday in the killings of Shadi Najjar, 17, and Artem Ziberov, 18. Najjar and Ziberov were gunned down June 5 while trying to sell graduation tickets. The two were scheduled to graduate from Northwest High School shortly after the shooting. Prosecutors said they were lured to the scene by Canales-Yanez and shot because Najjar reportedly stole drugs from Canales-Yanez’s wife. Three other suspects are facing criminal charges in the case.
