Several homes were evacuated in Bethesda Friday morning after a natural gas leak occurred near Beech Avenue and Old Georgetown Road, officials said.

Firetrucks, first responders and a HazMat team responded to the 5900 block of Conway Road before 11 a.m., near the intersection of Conway Road and Burley Drive.

Battalion Chief Erik Couse said contractors working on a home had struck the gas line. About four homes were evacuated, and one had a high gas reading, according to Couse. Crews were waiting for the gas company to dig out the line and cap it, he said at the scene around 11:30 a.m.

There was no fire and no explosion.
