Forums for General Assembly candidates in District 18 and 19 this week
Residents have the opportunity to hear from state delegate candidates this week as the political hopefuls in District 19 and District 18 participate in forums this week.
The Capitol View Park Citizens’ Association is hosting a forum for the eight Democratic candidates running for House of Delegates in District 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Kensington Town Hall at 3710 Mitchell St. The district has two open seats because incumbent Dels. Jeff Waldstreicher and Ana Sol Gutierrez are running for other offices. Waldstreicher is running for the state Senate in District 18, while Gutierrez is running for the District 1 County Council seat.
The candidates running for House of Delegates in District 19, which covers Wheaton and Silver Spring, are scheduled to meet to discuss the issues at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Young Israel Shomari Emunah in the Kemp Mill Shopping Center at 1132 Arcola Ave. Eleven Democrats are running for the three District 19 delegate seats.
County ‘Youth Summit’ Thursday
County Executive Ike Leggett is inviting middle and high school students to discuss the issues they face and concerns they have about Montgomery County at the recreation department’s annual Youth Summit Thursday evening. The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building, 1 Veterans Place, in downtown Silver Spring. Students are encouraged to talk about how some young people get disconnected from the community and how the county can help make better local connections. The event will be hosted by WPGC radio DJ Joe Clair.
Funk band playing in Woodmont Triangle on Thursday evening
The funk group Ohms Band is scheduled to play Thursday as part of this summer’s free Bethesda Summer Concert Series at Veterans Park in Woodmont Triangle. This week’s concert will also feature food, wine and beer sales by Flanagan’s Harp & Fiddle.
No County Council meeting this week
The Montgomery County Council is on recess for the next two weeks after it formally approved the county’s $5.6 billion fiscal 2019 operating budget on Thursday. The council does not meet during recess.
Showers predicted throughout the week
The National Weather Service expects a mostly cloudy Tuesday with a high near 82, with a 50 percent chance or more of showers throughout Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Highs each day are expected to reach the mid-80s with nighttime lows dropping to the low 70s.
