Private schools in Bethesda decide to drop Advanced Placement classes
Holton-Arms School and Landon in Bethesda are among the seven prominent private schools in the area that have decided to do away with Advanced Placement classes in the next four years. The schools issued a joint statement announcing the decision, saying the AP program isn’t necessary for college preparation and has “diminished utility.” AP stresses memorization and test preparation too strongly, the private school representatives say. Marriott will give away free root beer after groundbreaking
Marriott International will give away free root beer and commemorative mugs as company officials break ground on their headquarters project in downtown Bethesda. The giveaway is scheduled to begin Thursday at about 11:30 a.m. across from the Woodmont Corner Garage and will continue until supplies run out. Rockville’s new police chief to take office Monday
The city of Rockville is swearing in its new police chief, Victor Brito, on Monday. The ceremony will take place at Rockville City Hall and will begin at 6 p.m. Brito was the police chief in Hagerstown and, before that, worked in the Metropolitan Police Department in D.C. for 25 years. New water tests show elevated lead levels in more MCPS schools
Elevated levels of lead showed up in samples from drinking water at more than 60 Montgomery County public schools in a new round of water testing. Montgomery County Public Schools has been conducting a systemwide review of its drinking water since February. The newest batch of reports were from tests at 150 schools. MCPS representatives said elementary schools accounted for most of the roughly 60 schools where elevated levels of lead were detected; the school system has fixed water outlets in these locations or is working on a solution.
