Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza in downtown Silver Spring closed over the weekend, according to a sign posted on the glass front doors of the restaurant.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that Pete’s Silver Spring has closed,” the sign posted at the 962 Wayne Ave. eatery said. “We thank you all for your years of patronage and appreciation.”

The restaurant, which opened in June 2013 and specialized in the New Haven-style charred, thin-crust pizza, was one of three locations of a mini chain that also has eateries in Friendship Heights. D.C. and Clarendon, Virginia. The other two locations will remain open, according to the posted sign.

The restaurant’s closing was first reported by Silver Spring blog Source of the Spring.

The closure creates another restaurant vacancy in downtown Silver Spring and the second near the busy intersection of Wayne and Georgia avenues. La Madeleine, a French café at the corner of Georgia and Wayne avenues, closed in April 2017 and the space remains vacant.

Other vacant restaurant spaces in the downtown area include the former home of Lincoln’s Bar-B-Que by the public fountain on Ellsworth Drive, which has been unfilled since the barbecue restaurant closed in January.

On the other side of Colesville Road, the space that housed The Classics has been vacant since the restaurant closed in February after about 12 years in business.
