After closing last year at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Car Wash Coffee in Kensington won’t be reopening.

In an interview Saturday morning, owner Steve Harris said his family, which owns eight car washes in the region, including the one next door to the coffee shop, will likely use the space as an office.

“We weren’t making a lot of money there and we could use some office space, so I think that’s the direction we’re going to go, but we’re not going to reopen it,” Harris said, adding that the neighboring car wash that the family owns will remain in business.

Car Wash Coffee, opened in 2018, was the only coffee shop the family operated.

“This was our only coffee shop and we’re not experts at that, but we’re experts at washing cars, and we love doing that for people in the community,” Harris said.

Car Wash Coffee first announced its “temporary” closure on Facebook on March 18, 2020. An updated post in August said that it remained closed as “we continue to assess the COVID-19 situation.”

The coffee shop served drinks, breakfast and lunch, and aimed to serve as a gathering place for the Kensington community, Harris said.
