Mandalay, a Burmese restaurant at 930 Bonifant St. in downtown Silver Spring, is closing at the end of the month.

Mandalay has been in business for more than 20 years, and in Silver Spring for 17, employee Saw Myint told Bethesda Beat on Wednesday. The restaurant moved to Silver Spring from College Park in 2004.

Myint said the lease for the space is up at the end of the month, and a new tenant will be coming in. The rent had become too expensive, he said.

Myint thanked customers for supporting the business over the years.

“We have very loyal customers. We feel very sad … to leave here. The customers feel the same,” he said.

Mandalay’s last day in business will be Oct. 31, according to a message posted on the restaurant’s website.

The message states that Mandalay will “still live through a few locations” in Washington, D.C. The family that owns Mandalay also owns the restaurant Bandoola Bowl in D.C., and they plan to open a second location.
