A track & field coach and security assistant at Northwood High School in Silver Spring has been arrested on felony child sex assault and molestation charges in connection with allegations that he had sex with a student.
Giovanni Di Angelo Reumante, 31, of Takoma Park, was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at Dulles International Airport in Virginia on Tuesday. Reumante had flown back from the Dominican Republic, according to a Customs and Border Protection press release.
In a letter to the Northwood community on Thursday, Principal Jonathan Garrick wrote that Reumante is a security assistant and track & field coach. The arrest is related to two charges of a sex offense “for allegedly engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor student who is now a graduate of our school,” Garrick wrote.
“The allegations against Mr. Reumante are troubling, reprehensible, and are contrary to the principles and values of MCPS and our community,” he wrote.
Garrick added that Reumante has been placed on administrative leave and is not allowed on campus.
Montgomery County police have filed an extradition warrant. Reumante has been turned over to the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority Police for extradition proceedings, according to Customs and Border Protection.
County police said in a press release on Thursday that Reumante had been a track coach at the school since 2013. Police said the sexual contact occurred during and after school hours, and that they began investigating Reumante on Oct. 27.
County police are asking anyone with information about Reumante to call the Special Victims Investigations Division at 240-773-5400.
