Care for Your Health (care4yourhealth.org) strives to provide multicultural health care to elders that supports life changes, enhances enjoyment and promotes aging in place. In addition to organizing immunization events in the community, the organization provides primary care in office and at home plus hospital at home services. It is expanding toward holistic delivery of health services, with grief counseling, social assistance and podiatry.

What a donation buys:

  • $120 sponsors a home visit by a nurse practitioner.

EveryMind (every-mind.org) has been impacting the mental health and wellness of children, youths, adults, veterans and families for 65 years. EveryMind’s dedicated staff and volunteers strengthen communities and empower individuals to reach optimal mental wellness by providing access to resources, suicide prevention services, community education and advocacy.

What a donation buys:

  • $100 provides cleaning and essentials to establish a home for a previously homeless neighbor. 
  • $1,000 supports 10 therapy sessions for a child who has experienced trauma.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Ongoing: Help low-income and elderly residents with federal benefits, routine budgeting and bill paying; spend time with older adults who may be isolated and lonely.

Girls on the Run of Montgomery County (girlsontherunofmoco.org) is committed to inspiring preteen girls to respect themselves and their bodies. GOTR combines training for a 5K road race with uplifting workouts and team-building exercises at over 100 elementary and middle schools. Some 5,000 girls from diverse backgrounds join annually, 25% of whom are on free or reduced-price lunch and cannot participate in most after-school activities because of the expense; for these young athletes, the program is offered at low to no cost (running shoes included). Committed to “full person” health, GOTR couples physical activity with prevention of high-risk behavior and promotion of self-esteem and body-size satisfaction—and each practice ends with encouragement and positive reinforcement from the all-volunteer coaching team.

Hope Connections for Cancer Support  (hopeconnectionsforcancer.org) provides free programs of support, education and hope for people with cancer and their loved ones. Hospital support groups focus on those under clinical care or just out of treatment, but as survival rates for cancer improve, more people need emotional support long after treatment is complete. At Hope Connections for Cancer Support, support groups for individuals with cancer and their caregivers are available for as long as the participant requires. Educational workshops, stress reduction programs, and mind-body activities like yoga, Pilates and meditation, along with social gatherings around celebrations like Cinco de Mayo or the Super Bowl, are a lifeline.

What a donation buys:

  • $100 provides one Pilates session to mitigate the side effects of treatment.
  • $500 provides one monthly support group for 10 people.

Mary’s Center (maryscenter.org) provides health care, education, workforce development and social services to approximately 60,000 people annually to build healthier and stronger communities. Mary’s Center embraces culturally diverse communities to provide them with the highest quality of care, regardless of their ability to pay.

  • $300 covers the cost of two medical visits for a participant.
  • $1,000 provides school-based counseling to a student in need of mental health support.

Mercy Health Clinic (mercyhealthclinic.org) is a community-based health clinic that provides medical care, health education and medications—free of charge—to uninsured low-income residents of the county. In 2021, Mercy began providing healthcare, including vaccines and behavioral health services to adolescents ages 13-17. The clinic’s medical services are delivered by volunteer physicians and a small staff of health professionals that reach over 2,500 patients annually.

What a donation buys:

  • $250 provides cancer screenings, support and follow-up for five patients.
  • $1,000 provides initial health screening, behavioral health assessment and required vaccines for 15 adolescents.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Ongoing: Volunteer to see patients (physicians/nurses licensed in Maryland), serve as an interpreter, or provide support for marketing/social media outreach.

Mobile Medical Care (MobileMed) (mobilemedicalcare.org) is a Federally Qualified Health Center providing primary health care for low-income, uninsured and underinsured Montgomery County residents. Their goal is to improve the health of individuals facing significant barriers in accessing health care. The staff and volunteer clinicians strive to deliver comprehensive health care in a culturally appropriate manner. With changes in health care caused by the pandemic, MobileMed adapted by implementing telehealth services, expanding case management, and reinforcing outreach to those who may have deferred care, in order to provide high-quality care for those facing health disparities.

  • $500 brings mental health support groups to the community through NAMI MC’s Connection Recovery and NAMI Family Support Groups.

Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC  (ppmw.org) has served as a health care provider, educator, and advocate to women, men and teens throughout the Washington, D.C., metro area for more than 80 years. The organization’s medical team provides a range of safe, reliable health care for all—including contraception and family planning, primary care, gender affirming (hormone therapy) care, behavioral health and telehealth services. PPMW also trains teens in reproductive health and STD/HIV, healthy relationships, healthy life-skills and prevention strategies.

Primary Care Coalition (primarycarecoalition.org) creates access to medical care, behavioral health services and medicines for low-income, uninsured children and adults. Working with local clinics, specialists, hospitals and other care providers, Primary Care Coalition builds capacity and partnerships in the community to provide health care for those who face economic, linguistic and other barriers to better health.
