Dr. Katherine Roe’s critique of the National Institutes of Health’s maternal deprivation experiments on baby monkeys led to the laboratory’s closure. Now, she leads efforts to challenge the outdated animal experimentation paradigm. Sh“Animals are being killed for experiments that cannot yield human-relevant results—wasting resources and failing patients,” she says. “That’s why PETA scientists have developed the Research Modernization Deal—a plan for phasing out animal experiments in favor of cutting-edge, non-animal research methodologies.” e earned her Ph.D. from the University of California–San Diego and has more than 20 years’ experience conducting human brain research, including at Johns Hopkins University and the National Institute of Mental Health.
