Why are you running for this office?
I am running to bring the voice of the people into the halls of power: an attorney; mother; small business owner; and parent of five children in our schools. I understand the needs of this district. As a legislator I have been a fierce advocate who delivered for this district. I bring a fresh perspective and fire to the fight. Along with the experience and relationships to bring resources back to this community. I’m running because we need an Angel in Congress.
What is the most important issue in this race and what specific plans do you have to address it?
Ensuring our schools have the funding they need to meet the needs of the students they serve is one of the most critical issues I will be working on. I will ensure we are receiving any and all federal funding that is available. I will be working with the other members of the delegation to push for funding from the infrastructure bills helps expand broadband for our students and that mental health funding is allocated to address the trauma our students are facing.
What is one major issue that has been handled poorly and what would you have done differently?
I have always been very engaged with my constituents. For me, being an elected official means there is a mandate to be in your community serving. I will revive my Doughnuts with the Delegate and have Coffee with the Congresswoman monthly throughout the district. I will have a constituent services team that is active reaching throughout this district to ensure people feel heard and feel connected to what is happening on Capitol Hill.
What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office?
I am the only candidate that has work and advocacy experience in all levels of government. So I am uniquely qualified to work together with elected officials at every level to bring resources to this district. I bring a fresh perspective and fire to the fight. Along with the experience and relationships to bring resources back to this community. During my time in the legislature I wrote and passed more bills than any other candidate in this race. I have the know how and relationships to policy, create programs and bring resources to this district. I have served this community consistently over the past 10 years. I show up all the time, not just during elections. I will deliver for the people of District 4 and am ready on day one.

Why are you running for this office?
Simple, because I want to help. We need new leaders in this day and age. Everyday living expenses are increasing. Families are working but the wages haven’t caught up to inflation. We are in an ongoing pandemic. It seems no one is here to help the people going through tough times. I’m running to give people hope that at least somebody cares about their situation and will work to help change those circumstances.
What is the most important issue in this race and what specific plans do you have to address it?
The most critical issue in this race is inflation and its hold on the economy. There are families in this district who don’t have enough to eat or a safe place to live. We have youth, who are losing hope seeing their parents struggle. Wages are increasing but not enough to overcome inflation leaving many families experiencing tough times. I plan to make corporations and the wealthy become more
financially accountable. This will open new resources that can use be used to support additional housing programs or incentives.
What is one major issue that has been handled poorly and what would you have done differently?
The economy during this pandemic. We started helping our citizens during the beginning of this pandemic but now the help has slowed up. We are still in a pandemic, and I would like us to assist our residents more. Programs such as rental assistance and child tax credits
were critical resources for our less fortunate families. Unfortunately, a number of pandemic assistive programs have ended or dramatically diminished. I would continue to fully fund these helpful programs until the pandemic has ended. I would have encouraged counter-inflation measures earlier such as increasing interest rates months ago.
What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office?
I have professional experience on the federal, state, and non-profit levels balancing budgets and creating fiscal policies. My experience with grants allowed me to facilitate federal funding that directly assisted the needs of the community. However, the top experience that has prepared me for leadership is my life experience. I’m a native of Congressional District 4, and I’ve learned how to navigate and provide for my family during these challenging times. I understand the everyday struggles of our citizens and that experience will lead me in my decisions.

Why are you running for this office?
I learned the value of service from my parents. They wanted their children to do better than they did, a dream shared by families across the 4th district. I’m running for Congress because our voices have not been heard, our families and workers have been left behind, and our children have not been a priority. Our district does not get its fair share from Washington. I want to fix that.
What is the most important issue in this race and what specific plans do you have to address it?
Too many Marylanders must make difficult choices between feeding their families, affording their medications, or paying their bills. No one who works full-time in the wealthiest nation in the world should have to live in poverty. Yet that has become the reality for so many workers. In Congress, I will fight to make sure everyone can put food on their table by supporting a $15 an hour minimum wage indexed to inflation, fighting for good-paying union jobs, working to bring the FBI HQ to Prince George’s County, and fighting to make the wealthy finally pay their fair share.
What is one major issue that has been handled poorly and what would you have done differently?
It’s unconscionable that billionaires are tossing money to the wind for joyrides in space while they avoid paying their fair share of taxes. In Congress, I will fight to make the wealthiest people pay their fair share, and close the loopholes wealthy corporations have used to pay zero in taxes while we to reduce prices and the cost of living for the rest of us. Raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour with annual automatic cost-of-living adjustments will ensure that the gains of a recovering economy will be felt by all.
What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office?
I co-founded the National Network to End Domestic Violence, spearheading the passage of the Violence Against Women Act. From this experience, my passion for public service, and witnessing the needs of my community, I was inspired to run for Congress back in 2008, when I was elected as the first Black woman to represent Maryland in Congress. I served for almost a decade and am excited to go back and use my clout, seniority and experience to deliver for our community.

Why are you running for this office?
I am running to bring progressive values and a record of successful service to Congress. I want to assure that people are heard, and constituent requests are answered quickly and with respect. I will work for a more just, equitable, and prosperous society for all our residents where we have strong schools, secure retirements, safe communities with economic and environmental justice, strong unions, and public officials who protect working people and their families.
What is the most important issue in this race and what specific plans do you have to address it?
Economic issues. They need to be addressed in fair and just ways. We need rewarding and good-paying jobs, and those jobs need to be available to everyone fairly. Economic growth is vital, and it is important that small and minority businesses have a fair and equal opportunity to win government contracts and business. We need to bring inflation down, which hits working people hardest. Taxes need to be reformed and perceived as fair (currently they are not). Too often in minority communities economic growth comes with environmental degradation; economic growth must be linked to our demand for environmental justice.
What is one major issue that has been handled poorly and what would you have done differently?
Addressing climate change has lacked urgency. It is real, and fundamental changes are needed. Greenhouse gases must be cut faster to avoid the worst consequences, and we also need to prepare for the changes that are coming (and are already underway). We need to generate virtually all our nation’s electricity from renewable and zero-emission power sources. The power grid needs to be updated and hardened; buildings need to be retrofitted for energy efficiency, and new construction should be mandated to meet high efficiency standards. We need to move to all-electric vehicles. The crisis is real; we need to act now.
What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office?
I served as Prince George’s State’s Attorney where I worked in the community innovatively and successfully, and prior to that as a senior aide to U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. Earlier I worked for Rep. John Conyers as a senior legislative assistant. As a senior aide in Congress, I succeeded in hard-won fights against extremist Republicans. I know the process, and today our very democracy is threatened. As both an attorney and as a public servant, I’ve stood up for people who’ve needed a champion, and because of my wide-ranging experiences I’ve delivered.
