Gov. Larry Hogan on Tuesday appointed Jheanelle Wilkins as the state delegate representing areas of Silver Spring and Takoma Park.

Wilkins is filling a vacancy created when former District 20 delegate Will Smith Jr. shifted to an open seat in the Maryland Senate. The Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee earlier this month chose Wilkins, one of its members, as Smith’s replacement and forwarded the recommendation to Hogan for a final decision.

Wilkins, 28, of Silver Spring, is a senior field organizer for the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a Washington-based coalition of organizations.

“I am confident that Ms. Wilkins will be a strong advocate for her constituents in Montgomery County in her new role as state delegate,” Hogan said in a press release.

Wilkins will be sworn into her position on Wednesday, she tweeted.
