A large tree crashed into a Silver Spring house early Friday morning, displacing a family and knocking down power lines, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Around 4:45 a.m., MCFRS personnel responded to the 2900 block of Collins Avenue in Wheaton Hills for a tree that fell through the middle of a two-story single-family house, Piringer wrote on social media.

Piringer said the large “old-growth tree” caused significant structural damage to the house, knocked down power lines and damaged a utility pole, cutting power to several nearby houses, and also causing a gas leak. He said no injuries were reported.

Two adults were sleeping when the tree fell on their home, but they were able to get themselves and their two pets out safely, he said. However, the occupants are now displaced, Piringer said, noting that the Red Cross is assisting them.

Earlier this morning, Montgomery County police said that the incident resulted in the closure of numerous roads, including Dawson Avenue between Blueridge Avenue and Newport Mill Road and Collins Avenue between Parker Avenue and Ivydale Street.
