A teacher at a church in Derwood was arrested and charged Monday with the sexual abuse of multiple minors, and detectives are concerned there may be more victims, Montgomery County police said Tuesday.

Ervin Jeovany Alfaro Lopez, 33, of Germantown is facing multiple charges, including sex abuse of a minor, second-degree sex offense and third-degree sex offense, according to a police statement. He worked at the Elim Gaithersburg church at 15734 Crabbs Branch Way, church pastor Bernal Osorio told MoCo360 on Tuesday.

Detectives said they began their investigation in May after receiving a report of sexual abuse of a child by Alfaro Lopez. Police learned of incidents involving three additional children in September 2023 and January 2024, according to the statement.

All three of the victims were girls, according to charging documents.

The alleged incidents occurred between 2016 and 2018, when the victims were between the ages of 6 and 12 and while Alfaro Lopez was in his mid-20s, police said.

Alfaro Lopez is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, according to police.
