Takoma Park police responding to an auto wreck near Maple Avenue and Sligo Creek Parkway on Sunday night found the driver nearby suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.

Officers responded to the area around 7:58 p.m. and found a vehicle that had been involved in a crash, according to a press release from the Takoma Park Police Department sent Sunday night. The release noted that the driver was not at the scene when police arrived, and was later found collapsed near the old Washington Adventist Hospital, which closed in 2019.

The victim, an adult Hispanic male, appeared to have a gunshot wound to his leg and was transported to a local hospital, according to police. As of 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, the victim was reported to be in stable condition.

Upon preliminary investigation by police, it appeared that the shooting incident may have occurred at a different location than the crash scene.

A witness told police they saw a passenger flee the scene, but police, along with help from the Park Police and Montgomery County Police Department’s K9 unit, were unable to locate them.

Takoma Park police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact them at 301-270-1100.
