This story, originally published at 8:33 a.m. on Feb. 14, 2024, was updated at 5:42 p.m. to add more information about the incident and that police originally reported that a second vehicle struck the pedestrian, but that has been unfounded.

A pedestrian was fatally struck on Tuesday night by a vehicle in the 9500 block of Georgia Avenue near downtown Silver Spring, according to Montgomery County police.

The incident marks the first pedestrian death in the county this year. Last year, 15 pedestrians were killed in the county, according to Zero Deaths Maryland, which is part of the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office.

There were reports initially that a second vehicle struck the pedestrian, but police said that has been unfounded.

“During these types of investigations, detectives need time to uncover the facts, which is the reason why we could not confirm last night that another vehicle left the scene after striking the pedestrian,” police said in an email release.

According to police, officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service personnel responded at about 8:04 p.m. to Georgia Avenue at Flora Lane for a pedestrian collision. The adult male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, police said in a press release.

Police determined that the driver of a gray 2020 Honda CR-V was traveling northbound on Georgia Avenue when he struck a man who was in the roadway near Flora Lane, and the driver remained at the scene.

At 8:57 p.m., police posted on social media that Southbound Georgia Avenue was closed at I-495 due to a traffic collision and that drivers should seek alternate routes.

Police said the crash investigation is ongoing and more information will be released when it becomes available. Anyone with information about this incident can call Collision Reconstruction Unit detectives at 240-772-6620.

Montgomery County has its Vision Zero plan in place, which allocates resources to help eliminate serious injury and fatal collisions on county roads for vehicle occupants, pedestrians and bicyclists by the end of 2030.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
