Eight Montgomery County public schools (MCPS) are among the top 20 public high schools in Maryland, according to the rankings released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda was the No. 2 school in the state, behind Baltimore’s Eastern Technical High School. Poolesville High School snatched bronze.

Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, Winston Churchill High School in Potomac and Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville round out the top six.

U.S. News & World Report bases its annual list on such metrics as college readiness, state assessment performance, underserved student performance and graduation rate.

Poolesville dropped two spots from last year’s ranking, when it was No. 1 in the state, while Walt Whitman rose a spot. Thomas S. Wootton and Winston Churchill maintained their positions.
