A Washington, D.C., man is expected to serve 25 years in prison after he was sentenced  Monday for shooting a Maryland-National Capital Park Police officer in Olney in 2022, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Theresa Chernosky sentenced Trevon G. Brox, 28, to 40 years, with 15 years suspended, and five years of probation, the State’s Attorney’s Office said in a release.

On the morning of Feb. 1, 2022, Brox was accused of stealing items from lockers at a swim center located at 16601 Georgia Ave. in Olney, and drove away at a “high rate of speed” when police arrived, according to charging documents.

Brox’s car hit another car at King William Drive and Georgia Avenue and Brox fled on foot, charging documents stated. Park Police Cpl. Brian Rumsey, who had followed Brox from the swim center in his cruiser, observed Brox running away from the collision and exited his cruiser to catch up to Brox on foot. Rumsey eventually approached him on Buehler Court, charging documents indicated.

Rumsey told Brox to stop, and when “it was evident that the suspect was not going to comply with verbal commands and was going to actively resist arrest,” he deployed pepper spray at Brox, but it “did not take effect,” according to charging documents.

Almost immediately, Brox pulled out a gun and fired one round directly at Rumsey, while he was less than 8 feet away from him and “attempted to murder Cpl. Rumsey,” according to charging documents.

At that moment, Rumsey dove to the right, and Brox missed him, striking the rear of a car parked behind him instead, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office.

“This defendant boldly opened fire on an officer at point-blank range in the middle of the day, in a highly populated townhome community, not far from a playground,” State’s Attorney John McCarthy said in a release. “This highlights the selfless risks our law enforcement officers take every day to keep our communities safe.”

Other officers arrived to search for Brox. They found him behind a residence on Buehler Court and arrested him without incident, charging documents stated.

Police located property stolen from the swim center that Brox discarded and found that he had the bolt cutters that he used to cut the padlocks in the locker room, according to charging documents. On Jan. 9, Brox pleaded guilty to charges of attempted second-degree murder and use of a firearm in a crime of violence.

Charging documents state that Brox has been prohibited from possessing firearms since he was convicted for a robbery in 2020 in Montgomery County Circuit Court. Also, he is prohibited “several times over for numerous other convictions between Maryland and the District of Columbia,” according to charging documents.

“We are pleased that the judge imposed a sentence above the state sentencing guidelines,” McCarthy said. “We thank the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Montgomery County Police and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for their joint efforts and collaboration in bringing the defendant to justice.”

Brox’s attorneys, Thomas Mooney and Mark Anderson, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
