A 41-year-old Rockville man was killed Sunday afternoon when his motorcycle crashed on the Intercounty Connector (ICC) near the Shady Grove Road exit, authorities announced Monday.

Maryland Transportation Authority police are investigating the incident, which occurred around 4:30 p.m. on the eastbound lanes of the highway, the department said in a statement.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said. His identity had not been released as of Monday afternoon.

According to the statement, officers reporting to the scene found the man’s Kawasaki motorcycle and a white Chevy Silverado pickup truck that had struck the motorcycle following the first crash. The pickup truck, whose driver was not injured, did not strike the motorcyclist. The driver of the Silverado was not identified in the release.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) personnel responded to the crash and MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer wrote on social media Sunday that the motorcycle had caught fire. Traffic was diverted and the exit ramp was closed.

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of the ICC were closed between Shady Grove Road and Georgia Avenue as police conducted a collision reconstruction investigation, according to authorities. By 5:25 p.m., the westbound lanes had reopened.

Shortly after 9 p.m., Alert Montgomery announced that all lanes of the highway had reopened.

The collision was the second in less than a week that involved a motorcyclist. Earlier Sunday, Montgomery County police had identified Anthony Bernard Lee, 35, of Damascus as the man who died when his motorcycle collided with a car Thursday at the intersection of Snouffer School and Centerway roads in Gaithersburg.

The transportation authority police said the investigation of Sunday’s crash is ongoing and ask anyone who may have witnessed it to call 410-537-6905.
